How You Like Dem APPLES?

Maggie M.

Ever been to school before and seen APPLES everywhere? Well, I know I’m not the only one. Have you ever wondered why teaching is associated with APPLES? You might be thinking, “Oh, maybe teachers just like APPLES.” NO because my mom’s a teacher and she hates APPLES, so why do we associate APPLES with teachers? I’ll tell you now. It all started in the 1700s.

Back in the 1700s, the world didn’t pay for education. So in Denmark and Sweden, those in poverty would pay teachers to teach their children by giving them a basket of APPLES. This is why giving a teacher an APPLE is a sign of appreciation. Now you know why at school there are always APPLES.

Facts about APPLES:

  • APPLES are in the rose family
  • Top APPLE producers in the world include China, the U.S, Poland, Turkey, and Italy
  • More than 2,500 different types of APPLES are grown in the U.S.
