Sleepy Hollow

People say that the headless horseman who rides around on a horse in Sleepy Hollow is all a legend. Maybe it is, but what if it’s not.

Legend has it that Ichabod Crane went to Sleepy Hollow to become the town’s new school master. Things went well and he was living off of the kindness of his students and their families. They treated him to food when he walked many of his younger students home after school. Ichabod met a fair maiden named Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina’s father was a very wealthy man who lived in Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod was very fond of Katrina. Though, a man named Brom Bones also had his eyes on Katrina Van Tassel.

Ichabod liked to listen to other people tell stories about Sleepy Hollow. One night he heard them talking about the scariest story in Sleepy Hollow, The Legend of the Headless Horseman. The story was about a man,

his head was blasted off by a cannonball during the Revolutionary War. His body was buried in a church yard. Supposedly, his ghost will go back to the battle field in which he was killed looking for his lost head. But, he must get back to his grave by daybreak. Ichabod gets very scared of these stories.

One day Ichabod was invited to a party at the Van Tassel’s. Brom Bones was at the party as well, but Katrina mainly attended to Ichabod. Brom Bones, feeling envious, isolated himself from everyone else. Soon everyone began to leave. Ichabod Crane was one of the last guests to leave the Van Tassel’s. On his way home, Ichabod

was riding his horse and he saw the shadow of the headless horseman behind him. The horse sprung onto his back legs and pranced to the ground in beginning to race after Ichabod. No one knows what happened to the new   schoolmaster. But, people say if you go to the old church yard you can hear Ichabod’s loud and spirited voice.

Everyone has their own beliefs about this legend, but in my opinion, the story of Ichabod Crane was all a just a childish legend. People never will really know for sure. I guess the only way to find out is to go to the church yard and see if you hear the sound of hooves dashing across the ground and the voice of a cheerful man who disappeared in Sleepy Hollow.
