“On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month…” That quote basically describes how Veterans Day started. Veterans Day started at the end of World War I. World War I was a brutal war in history. But, the history of Veterans Day seems to be an event in the distant past. It is only known as a day in which you would have school and work off, and when you see all of the veterans sitting at grocery stores, giving out poppies for every person who donates. Veterans play a big part in American history. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have the freedom we have today in America. There are no veterans left over from World War I, and fewer every day from World War II and the Korean War. My grandpa was a solider in the Korean War. Today, all of the people that are in the military are volunteers. The military consists of the Army, Marines Corps, Coast guard, Air Force, and the Navy. Many people have had relatives that fought in these wars. Do you have a family member that’s in the military? Even though that is the only day that recognizes veterans and their legacy, everyday should be a day in which people recognize the hardship that these people faced. Every small thing counts, from thanking the veterans at grocery stores to whole memorials built for them. Every day should be Veterans Day.
